Messinian Islands |
|
Small, deserted, sunk in the deep blue of the Ionian Sea, facing
the southwestern side of the Peloponnese, lay the six beautiful
islands of Messinia. Their names evoke sounds of the sea: Schiza,
Sapientza and Agh Mariani (The Inousses complex), opposite the coast
of Methoni, Proti opposite Marathopoli, the legendary Sfaktiria in
the Pilos area, Venetiko near Koroni and finally, little Meropi just
opposite Kardamili. All of them so close to the coasts of Messinia,
but so far away from the usual destinations of the ordinary tourist.
Each and every one of these little islands has an unbelievable
uniqueness, and all preserve a natural environment of rare beauty.
Exciting vegetation is hidden in their hills, where wild birds and
animals have their nests. The crystal waters of windless bays that
hide imposing wreckage in their magical seabed wash them. The names
of many of these islands are closely connected with historic moments
of the Greek nation. They have served as refuge to conquerors,
seafarers, shipwrecked people, pirates, and saints. Their soil has
experienced bloody battles, and their water has frothed during sea
– battles under the ship- bows. The Messinia Islands, almost
unaffected by violent human intervention, maintain an exotic beauty,
which makes them, if combined with the joy of exploring and
discovering, one of the last insular heavenly resorts of our
country. All that beauty is lavishly opened to the traveler who will
cross the blue sea and respectfully approach the little, rocky
“Akrites” (front – guards) of the archipelago, the lonely
neighbors of the land of Messinia.
