The city of
Gargaliani
is a major trade and
commercial centre in western Messinia prefecture, locate on a 300-metre
plateau and surrounded by think olive groves. A healthy climate and view
of the blue Ionian, seven kilometers away, are among its primary
attractions. Artifacts discovered in the Anemomylos, Tsoukna, Kanalou, and
Lagnos sites have determined that the area’s first permanent residents
arrived between 3000 and 2000 BC. During Venetian rule the town was part
of the
Arcadia
district’s Mothoni
prefecture. During the Orlov uprising in 1770 the town was sacked by
Mustafa pasha of
Larisa
, while during the
1821-28 Greek War of Independence many local warriors took part in battles
around the peloponnese, especially against the invading Ottoman-Egyptian
army led by Ibrahim pasha. Finally, Gargaliani native Tellos Aghras left
area in 1905 to join the Macedonian struggle, then raging in the provinces
that were liberated by the Greek army in 1912 and 1913. Marathoupoli is a
