The distance from Kalamata is 77km and the road is
new. Filiatra is a city built on a green plain of olive groves and
vineyards. Is an important agricultural and commercial center. In
the town of Filitra there is one hotel named Limenari and many
rented rooms, National bank, Agricultural bank and Commersial bank,
many resturants, cafe-bar. If someone want to eat fresh fish, 10km
out of the town at "Marathopolis" there are many taverns.
Marathopolis is the second fish aerea in Peloponnese. For swimming
has very nice beaches such as "Stomio", "Agia
Kyriaki", "Laguvardos" and "Agrili". All
these aerias offer
both golden sanny coasts and crystal waters for almost year-round
bathing.
If you pass from the "Agrili" don't forget to visit
"the tower of knights".

Important mercantile center mostly during the 2nd
period of the prevail by the Turks ( 1715-1821 ). Considered as the
youngest city of Messinia. In 1886 was ruined from a very big
earthquake, while her name was taken by many rivers of the area. The
nearest village (12km) “ Christiani” was from the 11th
century chair of archbishop and until today is saved the Byzantine
church of the “Reformation of the Savior”, which composes from
architectural side the most important monument of Messinia, a
blossom sample of the Greek Christian civilization in the area.

It composes characteristic sample of church with
complex octagonal shape with careful walls and simplicity to the
aspects. Only 4 more churches in Greece belong to the octagonal type
and these are, Saint Sofia of Monembasia, Saint Theodore in Mystra,
Saint Daphniou and Saint Blessed Lukas in Fokida.
